ANZ Frequent Flyer Black Credit Card Review

Reviewed on 19 October 2020 by Vas – credit card expert & co-founder of Compare the Card

With 120,000 bonus Qantas Points plus $200 back when you spend $3,000 on eligible purchases in the first 3 months of card approval, the ANZ Frequent Flyer Black credit card is a top choice for earning an impressive amount of Qantas Points in a short timeframe. Packed with platinum perks including complimentary insurances when shopping and travelling, it also has a generous 55-day interest free period on purchases.

Winner Best Qantas Frequent Flyer Card – $1K monthly spend category

We polled some of the savviest Qantas Points collectors to see what they look for in a frequent flyer credit card and developed a methodology to strategically compare the offers in order to find the best Qantas Frequent Flyer credit card at three different spend brackets. The ANZ Frequent Flyer Black came out on top for two consecutive months at the $1,000 per month spend category, out of 25 of the top Qantas Frequent Flyer credit cards from across 10 different brands. This was predominantly due to its superior bonus Qantas Points offer that requires a comparatively lower spend to unlock, as well as its ease of earning points (thanks to the inclusion of BPAY transactions in its eligible spend, which isn’t always a given – as well as the wider acceptability of VISA cards compared to Amex).

What do we love about this card?

ANZ has one of the lowest bonus point spend requirements for a top-tier card, at an extremely accessible $3,000 within 3 months. As you can see in the first graph below, at $1000 spend per month, the ANZ Frequent Flyer Black blows the competition out of the sky. It’s a fantastic deal for those looking to earn bonus Qantas Points as many of its rivals require you to spend 30% more, plus hold on to the card for over 12 months, in order to earn the full amount of bonus points. On top of this, the ANZ Frequent Flyer Black offers a higher than average points earning potential of 1 point per dollar up to $7,500 each statement period (then 0.5 points per dollar above $7,500), with no limit on the points you can earn with the card.

Comparison based on $1,000 per month of spend over 24 months

ANZ Frequent Flyer Black Comparison

What benefits does the card come with?

The platinum perks on offer are excellent, with Guaranteed Pricing, Extended Warranty Insurance and Purchase Protection amongst the highlights. You’ll also enjoy complimentary Qantas Frequent Flyer membership. There are also complimentary insurances when travelling, including International Travel Insurance, Interstate Flight Inconvenience Insurance, Rental Vehicle Excess in Australia Insurance and Transit Accident Insurance. Of course, terms and conditions apply to all complimentary offerings, so make sure to review them before you apply.

Guaranteed pricing allows you to recoup up to $300 you may have overpaid for an eligible purchase at a physical store for up to 21 days after your purchase. This means that if you find a catalogue item within 25 km’s of your purchase within 21 days, you can claim the difference if it’s more than $75.

Purchase protection offers 90 days of cover if an eligible item you purchased on your card is lost, stolen, or accidentally damaged, up to $10,000 depending on the item.

Extended warranty insurance applies from the date the manufacturer’s warranty expires and applies for the same period as the manufacturer’s warranty for up to a maximum of one year (except if the manufacturer’s warranty exceeds 5 years). Given additional warranty is normally an added cost for big ticket purchases, this is a great way to redeem additional value from your card.

ANZ Frequent Flyer Black cardholders also get exclusive access to invitation-only events, from entertainment to once-in-a-lifetime food and lifestyle experiences. Some past events have included Australian Open Tennis experiences, unique dining experiences at exclusive restaurants such as Attica and wine tasting masterclasses. There’s also a complimentary Personal Concierge service that can help you with restaurant or hotel bookings, gift ideas, travel recommendations and much more.

What could be better?

The ANZ Frequent Flyer Black credit card’s international fees are higher than average at 3%. This means that although the card is fantastic for shopping domestically, it doesn’t make for a great international purchase companion (though this probably isn’t a big deal right now). As the minimum credit limit of $15,000 may not be for everyone, the ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum is also a solid contender.

Summary

If you’re looking to supercharge your Qantas Points, the ANZ Frequent Flyer Black is an outstanding premium credit card packed with platinum perks, higher than average Qantas Points earning ability and an annual fee on par with the competition (and largely offset by the $200 you’d get back by meeting the spend requirement). The Qantas Points bonus offer is also more competitive than many of its rivals, which require a 30% higher spend and holding onto the card for over 12 months to earn the full amount of bonus points.
