ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum Review

Reviewed on 19 October 2020 by Vas – credit card expert & co-founder of Compare the Card

With 75,000 bonus Qantas Points and $150 back when you spend $2,500 on eligible purchases within the first 3 months of card approval, the ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum credit card provides a great way to earn a big chunk of Qantas Points quickly (especially if you aren’t taking to the skies any time soon). Enjoy platinum perks including complimentary insurances when shopping and travelling and a generous 55-day interest free period on purchases.

What do we love about this card?

If you’re looking for a Qantas Points boost, the ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum is a great choice, especially as meeting the spend requirement will not only get you 75,000 bonus Qantas Points, but also $150 back onto your card, largely offsetting the $295 p.a. annual fee. The ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum credit card also offers great points per dollar earning potential (0.75 Qantas Points up to $3,000 and 0.5 Qantas Points above $3,000 each statement period), with no limit on the points you can earn with the card.

What benefits does this card come with?

The platinum perks on offer are excellent, with Guaranteed Pricing, Extended Warranty Insurance and Purchase Protection amongst the highlights. You’ll also enjoy complimentary Qantas Frequent Flyer membership. There are also complimentary insurances when travelling, including International Travel Insurance, Interstate Flight Inconvenience Insurance, Rental Vehicle Excess in Australia Insurance and Transit Accident Insurance. Of course, terms and conditions apply to all complimentary insurance offerings, so make sure to review them before you apply.

Guaranteed pricing allows you to recoup up to $300 you may have overpaid for an eligible purchase at a physical store for up to 21 days after your purchase. This means that if you find a catalogue item within 25 km’s of your purchase within 21 days, you can claim the difference if it’s more than $75.

Purchase protection offers 90 days of cover if an eligible item you purchased on your card is lost, stolen, or accidentally damaged, up to $10,000 depending on the item.

Extended warranty insurance applies from the date the manufacturer’s warranty expires and applies for the same period as the manufacturer’s warranty for up to a maximum of one year (except if the manufacturer’s warranty exceeds 5 years). Given additional warranty is normally an added cost for big ticket purchases, this is a great way to redeem additional value from your card.

ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum cardholders also get exclusive entertainment and lifestyle offers, as well as a complimentary Personal Concierge service that can help you with restaurant or hotel bookings, gift ideas, travel recommendations and much more.

What could be better?

The ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum charges an additional cardholder fee of $65. This isn’t a problem if you can meet the spend criteria on your own, however it may present a barrier if you were counting on an additional card holder to help you. As always, it’s a good idea to pay off your credit card closing balance in full each statement period to avoid the relatively high purchase rate, which is common amongst platinum offerings. If you’re looking for an even bigger Qantas Points bonus offer, the ANZ Frequent Flyer Black credit card is a top contender (though its higher rewards and perks come with a higher annual fee and credit limit).

Summary

The ANZ Frequent Flyer Platinum is a great choice for those wanting to boost their Qantas Points and take advantage of the platinum perks that come with the card at a lower annual fee. The $150 cashback offer also provides great value back against the annual fee for a card at the platinum level.
